How to Store Tobacco and Home-Filled Cigarettes to Keep Them Fresh
Why moisture matters
- tobacco that is too dry crumbles, falls out of the tube more easily and generally burns faster,
- tobacco that is too moist may clump together, cause jams in the chamber and be more prone to mould,
- properly conditioned tobacco is pliable - a gently compressed pinch slowly opens up, does not crumble into dust and does not remain stuck together in a hard lump.
Basic storage rules
- use a well-sealed container - open packaging speeds up drying, so close the tobacco carefully after each use or transfer it to a container with a good seal,
- keep it away from light and heat sources - direct sunlight, radiators and high temperatures accelerate moisture and aroma loss,
- divide larger quantities - keep a smaller amount in a working container and leave the rest sealed for as long as possible,
- use a purpose-made humidifying element when needed - a humidifying stone or similar accessory should release moisture gradually rather than directly onto the tobacco.
What about cigarettes that are already prepared?
If you prepare several days' worth in advance, keep the cigarettes in a closed box or case. This slows drying and also reduces the chance of tobacco falling from the open end of the tube. For larger quantities, a suitable sealed container with controlled humidity can also be useful. The end of a filled tube can additionally be closed with a dedicated tube-closing machine.
Quick tobacco condition test
Gently compress a small pinch of tobacco between your fingers and release it. If it slowly opens and remains pliable, it is generally suitable for filling. If it crumbles, it is too dry. If it stays stuck together in a lump, it is probably too moist. Restore moisture to dry tobacco gradually with a purpose-made humidifying element - do not spray it directly with water.
